| About the Artist | ||
Hazel Woodworth Carter, born the oldest of seven, has lived her entire life in the coastal Maine town of Harrington. Completely self-taught, Hazel started drawing at a young age. She says that in the classroom she was always drawing when she should have been studying.
In 1958 she graduated from cosmology school and started her own beauty salon which she operated until 1986, all the while studying art books and trying every way possible to become an artist (the primary goal in her life). In 1986, according to Hazel, I hung up my hair brush for a paint brush! Hazel now owns and operates the Blue Heron Art Gallery in Harrington.
Her works have received many honors which include an invitation to hang her painting at the State House in Augusta, Maine, the Purchase Award in the Bangor, Maine Art Show, and ribbons at the Sportsman Show in Augusta, Maine. Hazel's work can be found in private collections throughout the United States, as well as Canada and France. She currently has paintings hanging in several local restaurants, galleries, the University of Maine at Machias, and the Downeast Community Hospital in Machias, Maine. Hazel has also taught adult painting classes at Narraguagus High School in Harrington as well as giving private watercolor lessons.
Although Hazel started painting in oils, in 1986 she tried watercolors and enjoys them for the spontaneity. Hazel is able to convey the feelings and emotions of her environment with this medium. She enjoys painting all subject matter; however, seascapes are her favorite. And, yes, she does paint Blue Herons. Hazel and her husband Glendon live in Harrington, Maine. They have three children and six grandchildren.
